Purpose

Transportation is vital for health and economic prosperity. Cost-effective, reliable transportation provides access to education, health care, markets, and jobs. But most forms of transportation cause environmental harm. The Hydrogen Opposed-Piston Engine Working Group members share the goal of developing a promising solution for more sustainable transportation.

Hydrogen is an important fuel for sustainable transportation. It does not cause emission of carbon dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, or particulate matter when used to create energy.

Opposed-piston engines may be a superior platform for hydrogen combustion.

The direct injection two-stroke engine could be a very promising and interesting option for hydrogen combustion to achieve "Zero" NOx because of its advantages of high power density and inherent much lower NOx emissions. These two-stroke advantages are even more significant with an Opposed-Piston Engine, thanks to its higher power density and efficiency.
